Millions of links will stop working next year as a result of Google shutting down its goo.gl URL shortening service. The company gives developers one year to move their links to new domains.

Google announced the change at Google for Developers, this week. According to the announcement, goo.gl links will stop working on August 25, 2025. Starting next month, users will see an additional page informing them of the upcoming termination of the service.

The page will say "this link will no longer work in the near future". The company says that if the short link redirects to 302 then the redirect flow will be prevented from completing properly.

It is also possible that the embedded social media metadata on the landing page no longer appears where the original link appears.

History of goo.gl
Google launched the URL Shortener goo.gl in 2010 in response to the rise of Twitter, which had strict character limits until it expanded to 10.000.

It was the solution to writing a message on Twitter along with a huge link that would eat up a good chunk of your 140 character limit.

Google stopped accepting new links under goo.gl in 2019.

Goo.gl URL Shortening Alternatives
If you need short url links the solutions you now have are:

TinyURL – It has been around for a long time. It offers a free account, which has a limit of 100 URLs per month.
Bitly – good for just 10 links per month, but maybe enough for some.
