It was detected by the Financial Police and Electronic Crime Investigation Service, a major fraud case, via the internet, with the ordering of products from an online store.

Specifically, the action of a six-member criminal group, the members of which, using a stolen credit card, made a number of online purchases from an online store.

There are five (5) foreigners (29 nationals of the Republic of Gambia, two Nigerian nationals, 38 and 36, and two foreign nationals whose full details have not yet been identified) as well as one 36 national who was arrested , yesterday (30-01-2014).

A criminal case was filed against them, for - on a case-by-case basis - the offenses of forming and participating in a criminal organization, inciting morality and direct complicity in a criminal organization, fraud as well as accepting and disposing of proceeds of crime.

Investigation of the case began after an e-shop owner's complaint, according to which unknown perpetrators made five (5) purchase orders from its store, valued at 1.150, which they paid using a stolen credit card.

After the third (3) order, the complainant had been informed by the Banking Branch that these transactions were being questioned as the credit card in question had been used to repay the amounts declared as stolen.

From the Electronic Crime Enforcement Division, a police operation was held yesterday morning at 30.01.2014 in downtown Athens, where 36 was found to hold a package order previously sent from an online store to a courier company branch. A passport belonging to 29 foreign foreigner was also in her possession.

Subsequently, it was attacked at the headquarters of the Office and the police investigation that followed, was identified as being involved in "misleading" online orders.

In an investigation carried out at her house in Galatsi, in the presence of a Judicial Officer, a number of clothes were found which the complainant identified as the products he had sent with the aforementioned online orders. In addition, the passports belonging to the two Nigerian nationals were found as well as fake ones UK nationals.

The arrested man was taken to the Athens Prosecutor's Office, while the case filed at the expense of all the parties was similarly submitted.

The Hellenic Police Headquarters recommends and encourages Internet users:

  • Be especially careful about transactions they make over the internet
  • In cases of transactions and to avoid possible deception, when purchasing goods or services, they should check whether the website that they use is valid and to choose for their purchases, only known and safe websites
  • To use prepaid (prepaid cards) in their online purchases, so that only the amount that is to be used immediately is available, while at the same time, it is possible to add money only when there is a need, in order to process online transactions safely
