The Guardian has announced that it will no longer use X (formerly Twitter). All editorial accounts will stop posting to the platform.
Users will of course still be able to share the agency's articles on X, and journalists working for The Guardian will be able to link to or embed posts from X in their articles or continue to use the platform to gather news. .
According with the statement, X is filled with “far-right conspiracy theories and racism” and is simply not worth it. The newspaper reports that she would rather spend her time and energy on less "toxic" platforms. Furthermore, the Guardian clearly cites Elon Musk as the main reason for the removal, as the results of the recent US presidential election reportedly showed that Musk "used his influence to shape the political discourse".
The Guardian isn't the only news outlet to leave X: NPR and PBS are both gone as of 2023. Companies like Apple, IBM, Disney and others still publish, but no longer advertise on X. These companies have historically been the biggest sources of ad revenue on the social networking platform.
The Guardian claims it is able to make this decision because it does not rely on advertising as its main business model.
