Behavior of chip-and-pin security credit cards

Hackers have discovered a new way to break "secure" credit cards. Credit cards with chip-and-pin technology are considered to be the safest solution to magnetic cards right now. Researchers have proven that they are not as safe as we thought until today.

Banks meanwhile have changed the cards globally and using this technology, for safer ones . chip-and-pin card

Hackers were able to use a chip-and-pin card to withdraw money from an ATM in less than 15 minutes. A team of Rapid7 researchers presented hack at Black Hat, a hacker conference in Las Vegas.

The hack requires a skimming device that interrupts the signal between the machine of withdrawal (or POS) facilitating a MITM (man-in-the-middle) attack once the card is inserted. The device allows hackers not only to recover the data from the card, but also to reproduce both the chip and the magnetic strip. Of course they also get the PIN as the victim types it. From there, the hackers download the stolen data and recreate the victim's card.

The cost of the attack? 2.000 dollars for the accessories they need.

Rapid7 hackers reported that they were able to pick up 50.000 dollars with a single takeover.
