Hack back policy from the US: The military must be ready to stop attacks before they reach the networks of US computers, according to a new US Pentagon strategic plan.
The Ministry Defense (Department of Defence ή DoD) informed (PDF) its internet strategy for the first time since 2015, advocating a more aggressive approach than before.
Under the controversial draft of the new strategy, the United States says it is ready to "defend, disrupt, or stop any malicious cyber activity from its source, including non-military activity."
White House: 57 with 109 twice cost cyber attacks
The DoD said that means "we will face threats before they reach US networks".
it is about a bold but potentially dangerous strategy (hack back), as attacks are often very difficult to detect, especially when they are carried out by computer systems that have been compromised, to hide the true ID card and location of the invaders.
The DoD has said it wants to create a "deadly" force to combat weapons-related hacks, as well as malicious cyber attacks.
The US has long warned that several countries (Russia, China, North Korea and Iran) have used cyber attacks to steal secrets or interfere in US policy, and the new cyber strategy appears to be part of the US government's effort to prevent these attacks.
Of course, the US also uses the internet to spy on its competitors, and in fact it clearly states:
"We will conduct cyber operations to gather information and prepare our military capabilities in cyberspace. They will be used in case of crisis or conflict ".
However, although the US has been trying for a long time to find a solution to the ongoing attacks on its networks, it does not seem to be able to build a reliable infrastructure.
Russia's involvement in the election was a fact and America did not seem capable of reacting. The state is trying to name the hacker and may discourage the attackers with sanctions, but these measures do not seem to be enough.
We should all realize that the internet is not about big secrets…
