Instagram Impact of removing E2E encryption

Instagram will stop offering end-to-end encryption in private messages between users since May, after years of criticism from law enforcement and child protection organizations regarding this feature, according to a report by The Guardian.

Meta quietly announced this change earlier this month, via Instagram's support page and an updated 2022 news post. According to the announcement, end-to-end encryption will no longer be available in direct messages starting May 8, 2026.

This means that Meta will now be able to access the content of all users' messages, which until now only applied to those who had not activated encryption.

Comment from Jake Moore, Security Consultant at ESET:

"Removing end-to-end encryption means that the platform will be able to directly access the content of messages. Given the huge amount of data that needs to be analyzed, this move may be financially motivated, ignoring user privacy."

Not only could the messages be used for targeted advertising, but the data could also be leveraged to train artificial intelligence systems. Unfortunately, removing this layer of security means that the messages could more easily be accessed by either attackers or internal users.

"Most people assume their instant messages are completely private, and this change may disrupt that expectation. Therefore, it is recommended that you use messaging platforms that place a greater emphasis on privacy, especially for sensitive or professional conversations."
