Intel ends Clear Linux OS project

Clear Linux OS was a Linux distribution maintained by Intel. It was not a general-purpose operating system and was intended for more specialized activities such as cloud computing, distributed computing, and DevOps.

But the main advantage of this distribution was that it was optimized for Intel hardware, and later these improvements were extended to AMD. Despite the fact that it was quite popular in its specialized community, Intel decided to end the project.

In a forum post , the Clear Linux OS team announced that effective immediately, Intel is ending support for the project. This means that no security or other updates will be provided for the operating system. Additionally, the project's GitHub repository will soon be archived in read-only mode.

Intel, on the other hand, urges Clear Linux OS users to use another Linux distribution that is maintained frequently and consistently.

The company did not say why it was ending the project, but it is likely that this decision was driven by cost-cutting measures. Intel recently announced layoffs of 5.000 employees, citing that it is far behind in the AI race.

Intel says that despite the distribution's demise, it remains fully committed to the Linux ecosystem and will continue to support open-source projects and distributions maintained by others. Its efforts will revolve around the same area, improving Linux performance on Intel hardware.

It remains to be seen which Linux distribution Clear Linux OS users will choose.
