US: Blocking of Italian hacktivist collective Autistici/Inventati

The US government, just 24 hours ago, officially declared global terrorist organization the Italian technological collective Autistic/Invented (the website is currently offline).The category is that "provide a full range of services – including encrypted chat and email, web hosting, secure video conferencing and content streaming, anonymity shields and a range of other technological tools – to Marxist, anarchist and other left-wing extremist groups in the United States, Europe and elsewhere».

The collective issued a statement , refuting the accusations.

To put it simply, a group of volunteer hackers, whose purpose is to offer free and complimentary technologies, has become the target of the largest police and propaganda machine in the world, not for their actions but for their ideology.

Read the collective's press release about how their bank accounts and website have been blocked. Among other things, it gives a very good picture of the US's hostage-taking of the global technological and economic superstructure.

Initially, something that, I confess, had never crossed my mind. Blocking the website through the top level domain itself (here .org). Here, even the framework of "classic" civil legality regarding national jurisdiction is bypassed. An international warrant is not even involved. The US decides that someone is a terrorist and directly the domain (e.g. .com, .org, etc.) can be suspended because they operate on networks of their own infrastructure. We are talking about unprecedented things that create precedents and change every balance.

I remind you that Autistici/Inventati is a group that operates in the EU (Italy) legally . If this can be done to a group of hack-tivist(s), what's stopping the US from doing it to individuals, media outlets, political/social organizations, civic parties or even governments?

ICANN is the ultimate coordinator of the Domain Name System (DNS). It manages the central directory of all top-level domains, such as .com, .org, but also those of countries such as .gr and .uk. As a US company, the government can block any domain, making the traditional internet completely controlled. And this includes services (chat, e-mail, etc.) not just websites.

As far as I know, only .onion and blockchain domains (.eth, .crypto) are independent, so at a minimum, we need them as a backup, initially, and then gradually transition to them.

One of the US accusations is that they provide “anonymity shields”. This is another nuclear bomb to the foundations of free technology. Here, it is not the act that is being judged, nor even the intention, but the means itself. And this, in the future, may also include tools such as GrapheneOS, the tor network, xmpp or even GNU/Linux itself or cryptographic software.

We are clearly in the dystopian era of big brother...

While anti-social platforms (facebook, youtube, Xitter, etc.) host every far-right garbage there is with proven incitement to violence, they block Autistici/Inventati because it gives voice to the most excluded voices on the planet, those of organizations for the liberation of Palestine.
