Current models (iPhone 7) are already resistant to moisture and dust. Each device is IP67 certified, but the damage that water can cause is not covered by Apple's warranty.
Apple warns:
Resistance to moisture, water and dust are not permanent conditions and can be considered a result of normal wear and tear.
Or, to put it simply, the older iPhone 7 is less durable.
The new models will have IP68 protection. 6 which means they will still be dust resistant but will have additional water protection. For comparability, Samsung Galaxy S8 - which also has IP68 certification - can withstand a depth of 1,5 meters for 30 minutes.
The iPhone 8 is expected to have the same (or better) specifications. The 4,7 inch version, which is already rumored to have wireless charge, should also have improved sealing.
