The iPhone X is finally here, after months of leaks, contradictory rumors and speculations about the features that the device might or may not have. So we have one anniversary model with a screen-to-edge face recognition and many more that have impressed the world.
Apple says the iPhone X is the smartphone of the future. At the start of yesterday's event, CEO Tim Cook said something that made many fanboys nod: the iPhone has introduced "one innovation after another" helping to change the world and empower people to do more.
We are not going to discuss how the level of innovation created by the iPhone released a decade ago. We should see something else that deserves a bit more attention.
Innovation; Not so much
First of all, let's talk about this innovative approach that Tim Cook chose to introduce the iPhone X. Okay, there are a few minor exceptions (like the new impressive chip), but the features that the iPhone X brings are a packet which already exists for many years in rival devices.
The presentation of her device Apple Lossless Audio CODEC (ALAC), also built on Face ID that is pretty much Windows Hello for iOS.
Η Microsoft introduced Windows Hello to its own Windows Phones since October 2015 with the Lumia 950 XL and yesterday came Apple almost two years after introducing facial recognition on the iPhone X as a groundbreaking innovation.
Beyond the words Apple's marketing department has prepared for the iPhone X. Face ID is a facial recognition system that is very similar to the other used on the Android ecosystem and works much more in the same way.
The joke is that Apple's face identifier comes with the same bugs we've seen two years ago in Windows Hello. Lumia 950 XL, and Windows Hello were rather slow and sometimes could not detect the owner's face.
During yesterday's event, Face ID failed for the first time in the first public presentation, which shows that although it started 2 years after its first release by Microsoft, it still suffers from the same issues.
Let's talk about wireless charging.
Apple describes wireless charging as a feature that is going to change the world completely. But there are many who charge their phones wirelessly for many years already.
Android devices have already done so for a long time. So again, let's not be fooled by the words of Apple's marketing.
Wireless charging works with a charging plate, just like on Android devices, but Apple could have built it in some other way that would completely change your life.
Patents have shown that Apple has considered developing a wireless charging system that would work across the room, and this technology was first identified in 2015. Two years later? Nothing…
Fast charging? It was not even mentioned
While the device will support fast charging, the company did not say anything about it. Fast charging came on the iPhone, but a few years after the feature was added to Android.
So, while Apple says the iPhone X is in any way the living proof of innovation, it does not seem to be.
Removing "home" is a big deal. This was something really innovative,
A hurried product
Apple has tried to keep all the things that are relevant to the iPhone X away from our eyes, but there are also the small details that reveal the truth.
Η date October 27 release shows that the iPhone X is indeed suffering from supply issues, and these were caused by Apple waiting until the last minute to complete development of an in-display fingerprint sensor.
Because this project eventually failed, Apple launched the production of the iPhone X later than usual and this leads to long delays in device traffic.
So, iPhone X seems to be a hasty product whose level of innovation does not justify Apple's pride.
Of course the iPhone X will make incredible sales…
