A recent mandatory security update for Windows 11 23H2 (KB5046633), started showing an unexpected notification to many users.
Users who installed the update reported a strange notification from the Windows Update service. The message falsely warns that Windows 11 23H2 is nearing the end of support and urges users to download a newer version of Windows to stay up-to-date.
This message was of course confusing, as Windows 11 23H2 is officially supported until November 11, 2025, and a full year of security and feature updates is expected.
A Microsoft representative confirmed in Windows Latest that the message is indeed wrong. "It's just a reporting error on our part," he said. Microsoft said it is investigating the issue and plans to resolve it through a server-side update within a week.
Additionally, the erroneous message includes an option for users to check for new updates – even though update KB5046633 is already the latest version available.
For those who encounter this misleading notification, experts recommend a simple solution: log out and restart the system. This action will delete the incorrect notification. Alternatively, you should wait for the fix from Microsoft, which will automatically fix the problem.
Microsoft has a very bad track record with Windows updates. In this particular case, no major damage is done, but it seems like every month we hear about problematic updates that add new bugs to her operating system.
You should consider taking a more conservative approach to your operating system updates. Wait a while before installing the latest updates directly.
