KB5062170 hotfix for Windows 11

If your Windows 11 PC is running build 23H2 or 22H2, you may need to download a new hotfix. Update KB5062170 is available for download from the Microsoft Update Catalog. It contains a one-time fix for errors that occurred when trying to install last month's security update (KB5058405).

Microsoft acknowledged the bug with failed security updates a few days ago and confirmed that some systems may encounter a recovery error with code 0xc0000098 when installing the KB5058405 security update or the May 2025 security update for versions 23H2 and 22H2.

Affected systems display the following message: “Your computer/device needs to be repaired. The operating system could not be loaded because a required file is missing or contains errors. File: ACPI.sys. Error code: 0xc0000098”

In the release notes, Microsoft states that KB5062170 is not required on systems that successfully installed KB5058405 and that it is only available through the Microsoft Update Catalog, not Windows Update. So you should only download KB5062170 if your computer is experiencing the ACPI.sys error code 0xc0000098.
