Microsoft has released Windows Recovery Environment update KB5075039 for Windows 10 to fix a long-standing issue that prevented some users from accessing the Recovery Environment.
The Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE from Windows Recovery Environment) is a troubleshooting environment used to repair or restore the operating system after a boot failure, to diagnose errors, or to remove malware.
In October 2025, Microsoft confirmed that the KB5066835 updates via Patch Tuesday introduced mouse and keyboard issues when using the Windows 11 Recovery Environment, making it difficult to use the troubleshooter for many.
While the company quickly released a fix for this flaw ( KB5068164 ), it failed to fix WinRE.
"This update contains an issue that prevents the Windows Recovery Environment from starting successfully," update KB5068164 states in its change log.
Yesterday, Microsoft released the update “ KB5075039 : Windows Recovery Environment update for Windows 10″ to fix the WinRE issue that was introduced last year.
“ [Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE)] Fixed: WinRE would not start after installing the October 14, 2025 update KB5068164 ,” the changelog states.
To install the update, the WinRE partition must be at least 256MB in size. Otherwise, you will need to increase the partition size using these instructions.
Before resizing any partition, including the WinRE partition, it is recommended that you back up your data.
The update can be installed via Windows Update.
Although the press releases will range from very select to rare, I said I'd pass...because sometimes the editors hide.
