KB5079473 connection issues in Teams, Edge, OneDrive, Copilot

It was definitely a tough week for Microsoft as it had to deal with a major outage of Microsoft 365 services. Before that, the company had to release a few hotpatch updates, such as KB5084897.

Microsoft confirmed today that the latest Patch Tuesday update for Windows 11 25H2 and 24H2 is causing internet connectivity issues and the error prevents you from signing in to use any of Microsoft's free apps, such as Teams Free, OneDrive, Excel, Word, Edge, and Copilot.

Microsoft states:

“After installing the Windows updates released on March 10, 2026 (KB5079473), signing in to Microsoft accounts may fail for some Microsoft apps, including Microsoft Teams Free or OneDrive. As a result of this issue, sign-in attempts will display an error message like “You’ll need the Internet for this. You don’t appear to be connected to the Internet.” This occurs even if the device is connected to the Internet. … Other apps affected include Microsoft Edge, Excel, Word, and Microsoft 365 Copilot. Whenever a feature in these apps requires signing in to a Microsoft account, the same message may appear.”

The company provides a workaround for the problem, which requires you to be connected to the internet when restarting the affected device, although it adds that the problem may resolve itself.

The company says:

“This issue occurs when the device enters a specific network connectivity state and may resolve itself. If you encounter this issue, restart the device while keeping it connected to the internet. This should fix the device’s connectivity state and prevent the issue from occurring. However, please note that if the device is restarted without an active internet connection, it may return to a connectivity state where the issue may reoccur.”

On the plus side, Entra ID or Azure Active Directory authentication and logins are not affected by this issue.
