The makers of one of the most popular Linux desktops have created their own distribution? The KDE project has acquired KDE Linux, which has just been released in version 20260202.
KDE Linux is an unmodified Linux operating system that acts as a “reference implementation” for the KDE Plasma desktop, KDE applications, and development tools. 
So, starting today, KDE Linux is entering alpha testing. It's not stable and not yet ready for end users, but developers and KDE fans can download a copy to get a taste of what's to come.
What is KDE Linux?
First of all, KDE Linux is a regular Linux distribution with the kernel, desktop, software, and a way to install updates. But unlike traditional distributions, the core components of the system reside in a read-only base file system that cannot be modified — “immutable.”
The read-only base system is derived from Arch Linux and is updated via atomic image-based updates. A rollback function is built in, so if something goes wrong with an update, it's easy to revert to a "last known good" image.
Compared to a traditional distribution, such as Ubuntu, the base system cannot be accidentally broken because incompatible packages have been installed or become unbootable after a partial upgrade.
Everything else (applications, files, configuration) is above the base and read-only, and cannot modify the distribution — not even root can modify files in /usr (the immutable part).
From an end-user perspective, KDE Linux will look and feel like any other distribution. It's only when you try to use traditional package management or try to access lower levels of the system that you'll see the unmistakable differences.
