Around 200 accounts from a suspected Chinese bot group tried to influence Americans to oppose artificial intelligence data centers on social media, the X Safety team said Thursday night. The X Safety team investigated suspicious Chinese accounts involved in influence operations and identified 200.000 that were “posting in a way that could manipulate a legitimate conversation about American artificial intelligence and energy policy,” the team said in a tweet.

The posts included content about how artificial intelligence is straining the power grid and driving up utility prices and “sketches depicting data center operators enriching themselves at the expense of the public.”

One of the reports estimates that opposition campaigns have delayed or blocked about $45,8 billion in data center projects in Virginia alone.

Jim Prosser, a former Twitter communications executive, has refuted Silicon Valley claims that the opposition to data centers is “Chinese psychopath,” arguing that big tech companies are using this tag to dismiss legitimate local concerns.

Prosser said the industry needs to spend more time listening to affected communities instead of dismissing them from afar: “If you’re a venture capitalist in Atherton or Menlo Park and you’re expressing your opinion about how someone in Ohio should feel when you’ve never been to Ohio, that’s a problem.”
