KB5121767 released to fix KB5101650 and KB5095093

Earlier this week, Microsoft released the Patch Tuesday July with versions KB5101650, KB5099414 for Windows 11 and KB5099539 for Windows 10. Accompanying dynamic updates (KB5106056, and KB5101719) were also released. The latest updates fix several security vulnerabilities, including a fix for a major flaw that has existed for the past decade.

However, the company has identified a significant issue in Dell devices using Intel, as the previous Patch Tuesday (for June), KB5095093, had started to show problems.

This particular bug was the result of an incompatibility between Intel’s Framework Processor Participant (FPP) driver and Dell computers. For those who don’t know, Intel FPP is essentially a chipset driver that includes Intel Dynamic Tuning Technology (DTT) and Intel Context Sensing Technology (CST). The former optimizes power and thermal performance to reduce overheating, minimize fan noise, and improve overall system performance. The latter detects a user’s presence using features like Wake on Approach and Walk Away Lock, automatically waking the device when someone approaches and locking it when they leave, improving security and energy efficiency.

Yesterday, Microsoft released a new hotfix as an OOB (Out-of-Band) version to fix the issue on affected systems. In the release notes for KB5121767, the company states :

“Microsoft today released an Out-of-Band (OOB) update to address an issue affecting a limited number of Dell devices with the Framework Processor Participant (FPP) driver (Intel IPF) that could cause changes in performance, power consumption, or system behavior after installing recent Windows updates. … Devices affected by this issue that temporarily missed the July 2026 security update (KB5101650) can now install this OOB update, which includes all improvements from previous security updates, along with this additional fix.”

This is an update specifically for devices affected by the Intel IPF incompatibility issue, and Microsoft says that it is not necessary to install it on other systems. However, because it is a cumulative update, you can install it if you did not install the previous version. It is available for manual download from the Microsoft Update Catalog.
