Last Sunday was for scientists the hottest day ever recorded on Earth
On Sunday, July 21, 2024, the average global temperature reached the highest levels in Earth's recorded temperature history so far. It had a daily average of 17,09 degrees Celsius.
And it's not just a random weather event. According to data from the Copernicus Climate Change Agency Sunday's historic day comes after 13 straight months of record-breaking temperatures and the hottest year scientists have ever seen.
Scientists have only been tracking global temperatures for the past few centuries. However, there is good reason to believe that Sunday was the warmest day on Earth since the start of the last Ice Age, more than 100.000 years ago.
