Linux Mint 18.1: Linux Mint is a distribution based on Ubuntu. It offers a more complete out-of-the-box experience, including browser plug-ins, media codecs, support for DVD playback, Java, and more. It also comes with a custom one surface taskbar and menu, several unique configuration tools, and a web-based interface for installing packages from the Ubuntu software repositories.
The Linux Mint team today announced the release of an updated version of Project 18.x. The new version, Linux Mint 18.1, is available in two versions (Cinnamon and MATE), in 32-bit and 64-bit architectures.
The new version offers Cinnamon users a new safeguard screen which displays more information and provides media controls even when the screen is locked.
On computers that have accelerometers, the Cinnamon desktop can now rotate when the orientation of the device changes.
Both versions offer upgrades to X-apps. Also, the update manager can display a list of available versions of the kernel with recommendations.
“The screensaver in Cinnamon 3.2 was redesigned and rewritten from the ground up in Python. Not only does it look better, but it's also much faster, more flexible and more customizable than the old one. The background Cinnamon slide shows offer a new screen saver. On laptops it shows the battery power so you can see it without having to log in.”
