In the last monthly newsletter published today, Linux Mint project lead Clement Lefebvre gave some information about the upcoming Linux Mint 22.1.
Scheduled to be released in December 2024, around the Christmas holidays, Linux Mint 22.1 will come with the soon-to-be-released Cinnamon 6.4 desktop with a refreshed theme that will be much darker and unlike before, will feature rounded elements , redesigned dialogs and space between widgets and table.
The new default Cinnamon theme in Linux Mint 22.1 also brings a new “Force Quit” dialog that will appear when an app freezes and becomes unresponsive. Additionally, the media buttons and Workspace OSD have been modernized, a new status applet has been added, and notifications, animations, and the main menu have been improved for the new Cinnamon.
The upcoming Linux Mint 22.1 will feature a much improved package management system with the internal Update Manager and Software Sources tools supported by Aptkit and Captain, removing the dependency on aptdaemon, Synaptic, GDebi, apturl and other unmaintained data.
“This allowed us to completely refactor the code in Update Manager and greatly simplify its architecture. It worked well, because it was written decades ago and some of the techniques and evidence it was based on were not ready for today," said Clement Lefebvre.
Linux Mint 22.1 will be based on Ubuntu 24.04.1 LTS (Noble Numbat) and supported by the Linux 6.8 kernel. It will be the first update of the Linux Mint 22 series, which will be supported with software updates and security updates until 2029.
