Linux Steam Beta: Linux system users who want to play games have more options today because of a new compatibility feature (still in beta) announced today by Valve, the company behind Steam.
Linux users will need to install Linux Steam Beta (Client) to gain access to the feature that brings games for the first time to Linux such as NieR: Automata, DOOM, Final Fantasy VI, and Doki Doki Literature Club.
About 3.000 games on Steam support Linux natively, but there are plenty more that don't. Steam Play could change that, allowing developers to test their game at compatibility levels and then quickly release a version which is compatible with Linux.
The official follows company statement:
today we have the Beta of a new and improved version of Steam Play for all Linux users! It includes a modified Wine distribution, called Proton, and can provide compatibility to Windows game titles.

It's a double-edged sword for them players of Linux. The new technology will certainly offer more options, but there is always the risk that game developers will start using only this and stop making games for Linux altogether. The concern is there but that doesn't mean most users won't be happy with access to more games.
