Some of the most popular apps in the world have been chosen by members of the advertising industry to collect sensitive location data on a massive scale. These data they trace back to a location data company whose subsidiary has previously sold global location data to US law enforcement.
The thousands of apps, which carry files from location data company Gravy Analytics, include everything from games like Candy Crush to dating apps like Tinder. Pregnancy tracker apps or religious prayer apps on both Android and iOS. Because the sensitive data is collected through the advertising ecosystem and not through code developed by the app creators themselves, the data collection takes place without the knowledge of the users or even the developers of the apps.

Gravy's data includes tens of millions of mobile phone coordinates of devices within the US, Russia and Europe. Some of these files also list the app next to each location data box.
404 Media collected the app names and created a list. The list includes the dating sites Tinder and Grindr. Popular games like Candy Crush, Temple Run, Subway Surfers and Harry Potter: Puzzles & Spells.
