The list of the fastest supercomputers in the world

The 61st TOP500 list, which ranks the world's top supercomputers, reveals that the Frontier of Oak Ridge National Laboratory retained its top spot as the only one exascale.

Reaching 1,194Eflop/s from 1,02Eflop/s in November 2022, Frontier managed to improve its score stagnation from June 2022 to November 2022, and the 17% increase is considered a great success. Frontier is based on the HPE Cray EX235 a architecture and uses an AMD EPYC 64C 2GHz AMD processor with 8.699.904 cores.

Fugaku, from the RIKEN Center for Computational Science (R-CCS), in Kobe, Japan, maintained his second place, as in the previous ranking. Finland's EuroHPC/CSC's LUMI joined the list in June 2022. After its upgrade last November, it is now in third place and reigns as the most powerful super in Europe. EuroHPC/CINECA's Leonardo in Bologna retained fourth place.

The list shows that AMD, Intel and IBM processors are the preferred choice for HPC systems. Based on the top ten, four use AMD processors (Frontier, LUMI, Perlmutter, Selene), use Intel processors (Leonardo, Tianhe-2A) and two use IBM processors (Summit, Sierra).

As in previous years, China and the US are ranked most often. The US increased its lead from 126 supercomputers to 150, while China dropped from 162 to 134. By continent, Asia is listed with 192 supercomputers, North America with 160 and Europe with 133.

It is noted that at the top of the list is the Fugaku system (Kobe, Japan) at the RIKEN Computing Science Center from June 2020 to November 2021.
