Today, Linux Mint developers released a new version of the Debian-based LMDE operating system. The code name of the distribution is 'Cindy' and anyone interested can find the download link at the end of the post.
LMDE in the 3 version aims to be as close to Linux Mint as possible, but without using Ubuntu as a base.
LMDE 3 is based on Debian Stretch and the official announcement states:
LMDE is a Linux Mint project and stands for “Linux Mint Debian Edition". The main goal for the Linux Mint team is to see how sustainable our distribution is and how much work it would take if we ever go away from Ubuntu. LMDE aims to be as similar as possible to Linux Mint, but without using Ubuntu. The package base is provided by Debian.
We should mention that there will be no point releases for LMDE. Apart from bug fixes and security fixes, the base Debian packages remain the same, but the components of Mint and her surfaceof work are constantly updated.
The distribution "wears" the Cinnamon desktop with environment which is also the Linux Mint desktop environment.
