LOTTO: How "random" is the system?

LOTTO fan? One of the biggest lottery scams in US history has come to an end as Mr pleaded guilty to her in an Iowa court late last month.

Eddie Tipton, 54, admitted that he developed a malicious software in a DLL file format. He then loaded the DLL on Multi-State Lottery Association (MSLA) secured lottery lotteries in 33 provinces, Colombia, Puerto Rico and the United States.LOTTO

Tipton was able to do this because he was the manager of Iowa-based Urbandale. THE scammer technician was one of five people who had access to these computers in the draw room.

According to the principles, Tipton uploaded the DLL file to secure computers in order to earn money from the Lotto lottery (and not only) of MSLA.

These computers were in a very safe room with 24 watch by security cameras. Prosecutors reported that Tipton was able to bypass security by changing the surveillance system so cameras record only one second per minute.

So Tipton found the time he needed to import the DLL file into MSLA computers.

Let's say this DLL file was the same as the original found on the computer of the fraudster.

The file allowed Tipton to experiment with her algorithm of random numbers (random number generator or RNG) until it manages to produce predictable winning numbers on specific drawing days (May 27, November 22 and December 29), two specific days a week (Wednesday or Saturday) and after a specific time ( after 20:00).

This malicious DLL also contained code that allowed it to delete itself after a certain amount of time. However, the researchers were lucky as one of these failed to delete.

Tipton recruited two friends to redeem the winning cards. The first was Tommy Tipton's brother, 53, a former Texas judge and a police officer. The second was Robert Rhodes, a Texas businessman and his former Tipton coworker in an IT company.

Tipton acknowledged that his plan allowed him to "predict numbers in lotteries in Colorado, Iowa, Kansas, Oklahoma and Wisconsin."

Fraudsters won 2005, but they made the mistake of 2011 when they repeatedly tried to win a LOTTO draw of 16,5 worth millions of dollars in Iowa. The winning ticket was from the 29 2010 draw December XNUMX.

Iowa's laws dictate that all lottery winners should be made public, but Rhodes and some of his associates have repeatedly tried to collect the voucher anonymously or via intermediaries. The Iowa authorities suspected something was wrong and started an investigation, which eventually led to the arrests of the three.

The known profits:
November 2005 - $ 568,990 jackpot in the Colorado Lottery
December 2007 - $ 783,257 Megabucks Lottery in Wisconsin
November 2011 - $ 1.2 Million Lotto in Oklahoma

Tipton faces up to 25 years of imprisonment for hacking and will have to pay 1,4 million dollars as compensation. His brother will have to pay $ 800,000. The money represents the total that the authorities have proved to have received the accused.
