Major Privacy is an advanced privacy tool for Windows. It is a continuation of the PrivateWin10 project.
It offers a lot of new features that are possible thanks to the use of a custom kernel isolation driver.
Conceptually, Major Privacy is a HIPS (Host Intrusion Prevention System). The driver can monitor and filter file/registry access, as well as protect processes from being tampered with by other processes.
It leverages built-in Windows mechanisms to restrict network traffic and offers a collection of privacy-enhancing tweaks.
It implements its own rules-based software restriction mechanism, i.e. the ability to prevent unauthorized or unwanted applications from running.
Using the process protection feature of the KernelIsolator driver, Major Privacy can protect unprivileged user processes from being compromised and their secrets stolen, even by threads running with system or administrator privileges.
Its ability to protect processes, combined with its ability to restrict access to files and folders, helps protect personal data.
Additionally, Major Privacy is capable of creating protected volumes housed in encrypted container files, so that access to confidential data is only possible when the user provides the correct password, and the tool actively filters accesses to the file system.
The privacy agent logs access to files (privacy agent), registry and network and provides comprehensive logs and visualizations of process activity on the system. This allows the user to check that their applications are only doing what they want them to do.
Major Privacy is designed not only to provide a line of defense against regular malware, but also to protect the user from any legitimate software, so that the software can be used safely and the companies behind it do not have access to anything the user does not want to make available.
