Mathesis courses are offered free of charge and will continue to be so. You can attend them until the end and participate in the weekly tests and the final exam. However, in most courses you will be asked for a small fee —around 20€— for the issuance of a certificate of successful attendance, provided that you are entitled to it having secured the required minimum performance of 50%.
This first part of the Ancient Greek Technology course emphasizes, first of all, the fundamental importance of technology in every culture as well as the special place it takes in the mythology of the peoples. This opening position is substantiated in the case of ancient Greek technology with reference to the Homeric epics and the broader Greek mythology.
Then, a detailed presentation of the individual technologies begins, starting with the most primitive, such as carpentry, pottery and metallurgy. For each of these, evidence from ancient Greek literature and brief descriptions of the corresponding technical methods applied are given. In particular, of course, for metallurgy, the main source of technical and economic development of Athens, which was Lavrion, is developed.
The following are the technologies that followed, in order of appearance, in human evolution, which today would be called civil engineering technologies: first, the construction methods are described, then the types of bridges which in Greek antiquity were formerly wooden, and later stone with the use of the dome. This is followed by a description of geotechnologies (foundations, piles, retaining walls, soil improvements) and this part of the course is completed with a detailed reference to the port works of Greek antiquity as well as to the canals that the Greeks had opened, to serve the large-scale trade in the Mediterranean as well as for their military needs.
