According to a memo seen by Reuters , the system will become the official “Recording Program,” and will ensure long-term funding and development across all branches of the military. The decision is expected to take effect by the end of the current fiscal year, which ends in September.

According to the letter from Deputy Secretary of Defense Steve Feinberg, responsibility for Maven will be transferred from the National Geospatial Intelligence Service to the Pentagon's Office of Digital Strategy and Artificial Intelligence Strategy within 30 days.

Maven will connect data, sensor feeds, software and algorithms, ensuring faster situational awareness, logistics, fire control and targeting procedures. However, humans will be in control, as the US Department of Defense emphasizes.

Maven was originally launched in 2017 as a project to automatically evaluate reconnaissance and drone imagery. In 2024, the US Department of Defense awarded Palantir a $480 million contract for further development, and increased the amount in May 2025 by another $750 million.

Feinberg said, according to Reuters, that it is "imperative" to now add to the stronger integration of artificial intelligence into the armed forces and make AI-based decisions a cornerstone of US strategy.

Palantir also emphasizes that its software does not make lethal decisions, but that humans are responsible for selecting and authorizing targets.
