Meta Messenger is one of the most common ways to send messages in the world. So the company announced that it will provide end-to-end (E2E) encryption for all personal chats and calls on Messenger and Facebook.
Encryption has been available on these platforms for some time, but this latest announcement means that the feature will be enabled by default for all private messages and calls.
Under the new system, the messages you send will be protected from the moment they leave your device until they reach your contact's device, preventing any intermediaries, including Meta, from seeing/hearing what you write and what do you say.
In the past, when messaging apps had or added encryption, it sometimes meant a more limited experience in terms of features. With this release, Meta said that users will continue to have all the familiar features, but will also get a number of new features, such as disappearing messages, message editing, read receipts, improved photo and video sending, and improved voice messages. .
By message processing, Meta strikes a balance. You will only be able to edit messages for 15 minutes after they are sent, and if you want to report someone's original message before they edit it, then Meta will be able to read your message edit history.
The messages that disappear, will now take 24 hours after shipping. Concerning the proof of reading, you'll be able to decide whether you want to allow others to see that you've read their messages. This will reduce the pressure to respond immediately if you don't want to.
The new features will take several months to roll out.
