Meta has three major social networking and communication apps: Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp. A few years ago, the company started integrating all three platforms so that users could have a seamless experience while communicating with family and friends.
However, now it is preparing to change things, starting with disconnecting Messenger conversations on Facebook and Instagram.
Meta will begin the process of delinking Facebook Messenger and Instagram chats in mid-December 2023, as he says the 9To5Google. Instagram's support website reveals that its users will no longer be able to chat with Facebook accounts starting this month.
Once the disconnection process begins, Instagram users will not be able to initiate new chats or calls with Facebook accounts. Additionally, any existing conversations between the two platforms will only have read, not write, send, and receive permissions.
The same will happen with Facebook accounts.
Meta didn't reveal the reason for this change, but it's very likely that they were forced to take new measures because of it Digital Markets Act of the European Union. This law requires major companies like Apple, Google and Meta to offer interoperability with other messaging platforms. So, it's possible that Meta is disconnecting Facebook Messenger and Instagram chats to prepare a newer cross-functional communication method that will be compatible with DMA.
