Meta is shutting down Messenger.com

Meta will soon shut down its standalone Messenger website. The move comes just months after the company also discontinued its official apps for Windows and Mac computers.

This change will take effect in April, when users will essentially have no way to access Messenger from a computer. If you try to open the Messenger website, you'll be taken to facebook.com/messages, which is part of the standard Facebook website.

Meta is notifying users of the change via a notification on the Messenger website.

Once Meta retires the website, Messenger will only be available as an app for iOS and Android. Nothing inside Messenger will change, as all your conversations will still be available, they just won't exist on the web.

This is particularly bad news for people who currently use Messenger without a Facebook account. They will have the option to either reactivate their Facebook accounts or use the mobile app. It should be noted that Facebook's Messages page provides essentially the same experience as Messenger, but requires an active Facebook account.

Meta has not publicly revealed what led to the decision. It only posted a page on Facebook’s Help Center . Reports online suggest that this is because the company wants to consolidate its services and streamline the number of platforms it manages. Declining usage likely contributed to this, as most users have already left Messenger.com for the mobile version.
