Meta plans to add facial recognition technology to Ray-Ban smart glasses this year, they said on Friday the New York TimesFive years ago, the company Facebook stopped facial recognition and promised to find “the right balance” for the controversial technology.

The feature, internally called “Name Tag,” will allow users to identify people and retrieve information about them through Meta’s artificial intelligence assistant, the publication reports.

An internal memo (released in May) acknowledged that the feature poses “security and privacy risks” and said that political unrest in the United States would distract civil society groups that might otherwise criticize the release.

The company is reportedly exploring restrictions that would prevent the glasses from functioning as a universal facial recognition tool, potentially limiting recognition only to people logged into Meta platforms or those with public accounts.
