Microsoft 365 Copilot sends your documents to OneDrive

Microsoft quietly changed the way it works Microsoft 365 Copilot on mobile and this will upset most people. If you use Microsoft 365 Copilot as your default viewer for documents, spreadsheets, and presentations and try to open any file, you will notice that Microsoft 365 Copilot sends everything to Copilot and automatically uploads the files to OneDrive.

The Microsoft 365 Copilot app was originally called “Office Hub” and was a simple document viewer before being upgraded with editing capabilities. This app has been around for a decade, but has undergone two major name changes.

Microsoft initially renamed “Office Hub” to “Microsoft 365,” which became “Microsoft 365 Copilot” in early 2025. Later, Microsoft confirmed that Microsoft 365 Copilot would live up to its name and focus on Copilot. While it can still open your documents, Microsoft said it would be good to use Copilot and create images or documents with artificial intelligence.

In October 2025, Microsoft hid the document viewer behind extra clicks and displays the Copilot chat screen with a prompt box on Android and iOS devices.

Now Microsoft 365 Copilot no longer opens documents normally. Instead, it uploads everything to OneDrive for Copilot to analyze and answer your questions.

Yes, an app, which was designed to open your document, now tries to summarize it using Copilot in a conversational interface.

After an update released over the weekend, the Microsoft 365 Copilot app for Android and iOS no longer allows you to view your documents locally, as they are transferred directly to Copilot.

Microsoft now indicates in the app that “opening documents from your device now starts with the Copilot conversation.”

According to Microsoft, the new app has two advantages. First, you can get quick summary information. Second, you can view your file at any time from the conversation.

At this point, if you want to view .docx, .xlsx, or .ppt files on mobile, we recommend downloading the standalone Office apps.

Microsoft 365 Copilot is no longer the app you knew.
