For the past two years, Microsoft has been trying different tactics to convince users to use its Edge browser. So this time it's trying something different. So lest we forget. The company has started running an ad that's different from the others.
Microsoft as reported by Neowin offers huge prizes worth millions of dollars if you switch your browser to Edge and continue to use the features built into it.
The company, as you can see in the screenshot below, is offering $1 million in cash or a car if you win a raffle. It also displays a QR code that allows you to download Edge to your phone.
The terms and conditions list several ways to increase your chances of winning the prize. This includes visiting the prize page, sharing personalized links to the promotion page with friends and family, using the Microsoft Rewards extension, redeeming Microsoft Rewards, using the Bing and Copilot mobile apps, and trying out the Bing Image Creator, Video Creator, and Copilot Search.
There are other PC-specific ways to increase your chances of winning. You can enable OneDrive backups in Windows 10 and Windows 11, set Edge as your default browser on your PC, check out the Lenovo and Acer Copilot+ product pages for PCs, or use the Microsoft Store.
The contest is open to residents of the U.S., select European countries, Canada, and Mexico. The grand prize is $1 million, but the giveaway also features some Mercedes cars.
If you see the promo banner you can close it using the “x” button. You also have the option to disable these “suggestions” (as Microsoft calls them) for a week or forever for that particular offer.
Regardless of the awards the company gives, many will consider this behavior intrusive, especially since it directly hinders the browsing experience.
Although the press releases will range from very select to rare, I said I'd pass...because sometimes the editors hide.
