The Control Panel is part of Windows since Windows 1.0 and has many fans who prefer it to the modern Settings application, which still lacks key features.
With the Windows 10 October 2020 Update, Microsoft is trying to get more Control Panel users into the Settings app and it looks like the company is upgrading.
In the latest preview versions, Microsoft displays more pages that were in Control Panel in the modern Settings application.
In the latest preview release, released in January 2021, you will see that it has added Storage Spaces to the Settings.
For those who don't know, Storage Spaces is a feature that allows you to connect multiple Appliances storage on your computer and treat them as a storage device called “pool storage”.
Microsoft has changed the interface of the old Storage Spaces feature and added it to Settings – System – Storage – Manage Storage Spaces (Settings – System – Storage – Manage Storage Spaces). You can click Storage Spaces to create and manage Storage Spaces from within the Settings app.
In a podcast, Microsoft explained that configuration pages are created with "accessibility" and "modern experience" in mind. These pages offer better integration with native Windows features such as Storage Settings and Storage Sense.
As you can see in the image above, the modern alternative to Storage Spaces allows users to create, add, remove and optimize storage pools.
You can also use the Windows Keyboard and Narrator to navigate between different pages and continue to use multiple storage devices based on different interfaces.
The Control Panel won't be removed, according to the company, but there's a chance that the Modern Alternatives pages will be removed or disabled at some point in the future to "unify" the settings experience across the board. functional system.
When this happens, some Control Panel pages will redirect users to Windows 10 Settings. Microsoft even plans to block certain third-party applications that could be used as a solution to access these hidden Control Panel pages.
In addition to Storage Spaces, Microsoft has released a new disk interface and partition management tool.
These changes are currently only available in preview versions, and we may see them sometime later this year.
