For the past two decades, and specifically since October 2003, Windows “Patch Tuesday” updates have appeared on the second Tuesday of each month. They are designed to deliver cumulative fixes as well as security updates for Windows SKUs.
Have you ever wondered why Microsoft releases Patch Tuesday updates so frequently and not on any other day?
The reason is very simple, especially for people working in corporate IT environments. The strategic decision behind not releasing updates on Monday is to give IT administrators time to look into issues from the previous week.
That made Tuesday the ideal day. Microsoft released its Patch Tuesday updates at 10 a.m. Pacific time, and administrators had the rest of the week to monitor the impact and resolve any issues. Microsoft itself tracks bugs reported by businesses and consumers so it can develop updates and release them in a timely manner if necessary.
Although the integration of AI across systems has been rapidly increasing lately, Microsoft has been using AI technologies for almost a decade to ensure that Patch Tuesday updates are distributed as smoothly as possible.
Microsoft Vice President of Windows Product Management, Servicing, and Delivery, John Cable, stated in 2018:
We're constantly collecting data from updates and retraining our models to learn which devices have a positive update experience and where we may need to wait until we have a better experience. Our overall goal is safe and reliable updates, which means we only move as fast as we can to keep you safe.
Of course we know that this is not the case. Despite Microsoft's design, testing, telemetry, and customer feedback, bugs still exist.
Not to say that it is expected, in the development of an operating system used by hundreds of millions of users.
