In June 2024, when Windows 24 2H11 was released for Arm-Copilot+-only PCs, Microsoft had assured that Windows on Arm printer support would work without any issues.
However, while the company acknowledged problems with printers on Windows on Arm, it didn't say anything about AMD or Intel computers, even though there were user reports of this happening on x86 (AMD64) systems as well. .
The problems were related to eSCL, as Microsoft finally confirmed today that the protocol does not work on Windows 11 version 24H2. So the company banned updating features on these systems.
The problem, Microsoft explains, is a result of devices not switching USB mode from eSCL when needed. So it blocks upgrading on PCs with some Ubisoft games.
The company says:
After installing Windows 11, version 24H2, you may discover problems with USB-connected devices that support the eScanner Communication Language (eSCL) scanning protocol. You may notice that your device does not detect the USB connected peripheral and device detection does not complete. This issue primarily affects USB-connected multifunction devices or stand-alone scanners that support scan mode and the eSCL protocol.
eSCL is a driverless scanning protocol designed for networked scanners. Allows driverless scanning via network (Ethernet, Wi-Fi) and USB connections. This issue is caused by the device not switching from eSCL mode to USB mode, which allows the scanner drivers to be mapped.
To preserve the update experience, we implemented a compatibility hold on devices connected to a USB device that supports the eSCL scan protocol. These devices will not be offered Windows 11 24H2 installation through the Windows Update release channel. IT administrators using Windows Update for Business reports can review this issue using Security ID: 54762729.
