Microsoft: closes MS Open Tech, and integrates it into the Company

Η Microsoft ανακοίνωσε πρόσφατα ότι η θυγατρική της MS Open Tech που επικεντρώνεται στην τεχνολογία code, will be disbanded and reintegrated into the main company, with a mission to make open source more accessible to the company's software source code.Microsoft open source

Jean Paoli, president of MS Open Tech, unveiled the news in one Publication on the MS Open Tech blog. The publication states that developers working for Microsoft participate in about 2.000 open source projects in and on CodePlex.

Three years ago when MS Open Tech was founded, open source was almost an unexplored world for Microsoft, but its founding helped the company to move on quickly and link it to open communities around the world.

"Eventually we came closer to open source communities"

“Τα MS Open Tech projects έχουν καταστήσει ευκολότερο για προγραμματιστές του Linux, Java, να χρησιμοποιούν το Azure, μέσω των tools plug-ins του SDK, και της ενσωμάτωσης με τεχνολογίες όπως τις Chef, Puppet, και Docker. Δημιουργήσαμε APIs για by Microsoft for iOS and Android,” Paoli said.

“We have contributed to open source projects such as Apache Cordova, Cocos2d-x, OpenJDK, and dash.js. We brought Office 365 to Moodle platform. And we've helped connect the Open Web to industry through HTML5, HTTP/2, and WebRTC/ORTC standards.”

As of today, as MS Open Tech developers no longer belong to a standalone subsidiary, they will provide tools and services to Microsoft technicians directly, thus allowing a streamlined process of continuous investment and focus on open source projects.

Today's news comes amid reports that Microsoft is thinking very seriously about the possibility of converting the in an open source operating system at some point in the future. It's a decision that could serve as living proof that "the culture of open development shapes the technology built at Microsoft," as Paoli said in his post.

But the decision to move Windows into open source is not that simple and we will not see it very soon.

The positive thing is that Microsoft seems to think positively about the argument and is looking for ways to adapt its business model to the open-source community that seems to be changing and evolving around the world.
