Microsoft kicks out VeraCrypt and WireGuard devs

A long time ago, Microsoft was looking to attract developers to build new software products for its platform. Now, the company is scrapping entire projects without considering the absurd consequences of some of its most questionable policies.

VeraCrypt developer Mounir Idrassi shared recently a disturbing message on the status of the projects. The developer said he was facing a few challenges, starting with Microsoft's decision to terminate his developer account. Idrassi said that without a fully functional account, the open-source encryption tool would not receive further updates on Windows.

Idrassi used the now-terminated account to perform some critical actions, such as signing drivers and the VeraCrypt bootloader. Microsoft reportedly deleted his account without warning or a clear explanation. Furthermore, Redmond provided no way to appeal the decision or contact anyone within the company.

As a result of the outage, Idrassi had no way to release new updates to VeraCrypt for Windows. The Linux and macOS versions are not affected, but most VeraCrypt users use Windows.

After the VeraCrypt case went public, other developers shared a similar experience on social media platforms. Microsoft was apparently launching a massive attack on accounts, affecting many security-related open source projects.

The list included VeraCrypt, VPN tool WireGuard, and VPN service provider Windscribe.
