When Satya Nadella became CEO of Microsoft 2014, a big question was asked: why should the company exist?
Microsoft has had a clear vision for decades: to put a Windows PC in every office. But the mission seems to have been largely completed. So the question becomes automatically what do we do next?
"When I was at Microsoft in 1992, we used to say that our mission is a PC in every home and office. It was tangible, clear, convisual and very empowering mission because it was clear to us who the company was and what we were trying to ultimately become," Nadella said, speaking in London last week.
“Even since the late 90s, at least in the developed world, we had achieved that and after that it was a bit unclear: what is our purpose? That's why I thought it was important for me in 2014 to ask the question, an existential question: why does Microsoft exist? and then I tried to answer clearly for myself and for all of us.”
Nadella said that in order to find the answer, he had to go back to the first product created by Microsoft, a key interpreter for Altair 8800.

Nadella wants to create a "culture of growth" in corporate culture, despite the great cynicism that exists.
