Microsoft is reportedly working to reduce the memory footprint of Windows 11 to improve performance on PCs with 8GB of RAM. This is one of four focus areas outlined by Windows chief Pavan Davuluri for the rest of 2026.
The other areas are integration and setup, family features, and voice commands. The initiative builds on efforts that began in March to address key criticisms of Windows 11. The company has not said anything about the technical approach to the memory optimization project.
Microsoft has confirmed its plans to reduce the memory footprint of Windows 11 to deliver a faster experience on devices with 8GB of RAM.
The company hasn't detailed how it will implement these changes, but the effort may involve porting more of the Windows UI to WinUI, which is lighter than WebView.
Davuluri described more areas that Microsoft will be working on between now and the end of the year.
Family will bring faster setup and improved access to parental controls, as well as new Family Safety features.
Voice will improve the natural and smooth use of voice interaction across all apps.
Since March, Microsoft has prioritized addressing major issues in Windows 11, with features and changes to improve its reputation. The publication notes that Windows 11 has seen significant improvements since late last year, with further improvements expected.
