Microsoft: Windows 11 transition video hints at OneDrive purchase

Microsoft recently released a video outlining how easy it is to upgrade to Windows 11. The video is a direct boost to Windows 10 users who are slowly approaching the end date. Microsoft explains how you can quickly upgrade to Windows 11 without losing any of your personal data.

But it suggests buying OneDrive.

The first part of the short video says you can “move” in an instant. It highlights the system backup feature that can save and transfer your system settings, applications, preferences, and personal files to another computer. All you need to do is make a backup and make sure everything is in it, including the personal files and folders you use.

Of course, you need a Microsoft account to save your system settings and preferences (including your app list), while OneDrive will take care of storing your personal data. It's very easy to set it all up via the Settings app or the dedicated Windows Backup app that now comes pre-installed with Windows 10.

Of course, the part about backing up your settings and system preferences isn't a problem. The real problem is your personal files, which aren't as easy to migrate. The free version of OneDrive has a storage limit of 5 GB, and it certainly can't fit everything.

So Microsoft believes that while you're looking to upgrade your PC, buying OneDrive storage is another good idea. The problem is that not everyone uses or trusts OneDrive. On top of that, there's the added cost of upgrading to Windows 11, which now requires you to buy a new PC if your current PC doesn't meet all the requirements.

Microsoft makes no secret of the fact that the free 5GB limit isn't for everyone and that you may need more cloud storage to complete your backups.
