If you haven't had enough of the tracking stories from the big tech companies, here's the good news: Microsoft is listening to you through the trusted Xbox One.
The new report comes from Motherboard and reveals that Microsoft associates listened to commands using the words "Xbox" and "Hey Cortana", but also sometimes heard random conversations. Earlier this month, Microsoft admitted that its employees listen to Skype calls and Cortana commands.
So now we have to include the Xbox (which uses voice commands before the release of Cortana in 2016).
Of course, this is somewhat disappointing, although it was something that everyone feared would happen when Microsoft made Kinect part of its system since the days of the Xbox 360.
No one wanted to hear Kinect hear random chats - and obviously that's exactly what happened. Microsoft - along with several other companies are collecting voice data to improve their AI software. All companies insist that the data they collect is anonymous as much as possible…
Microsoft told Motherboard, after the aforementioned revelations about Skype, that it would try to be more transparent about the fact that people are listening to the audio data it collects and not some mechanical system. He has since added a paragraph to protection policy of the private life:
"The processing of personal data for these purposes includes both automated and non-automated (human) processing methods."
This is probably one of the reasons why it is good for Cortana to leave Xbox One in a future update.
Microsoft Digital Assistant will no longer be available on Xbox One this fall. This move is supposed to be made by Microsoft to move towards "cloud-assisted experiences", with whatever that may mean.
