MIT's Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Department has created a new screen technology that allows you to watch 3D movies without glasses.
In fact the new technology makes it picture even sharper. It's called Cinema 3D, and in addition to the above, it makes the image visible from any seat in the theater.
"Existing approaches to screens that do not require 3D glasses use screens whose resolution requirements are enormous and completely impossible," said MIT professor Wojciech Matusik.
"This is the first technical approach that does not require 3D glasses in large rooms."
MIT reports that 3D screens that do not require glasses use a technology called parallax barrier. This technology uses a series of slits to force each of your eyes to see differently pixels.
The problem with this technology is that the viewer should be sitting right in front of the screen, and within walking distance.
This is of course not easy in a movie theater, and so the researchers created screens with the new Cinema 3D technology.
Let's say we probably will not see the new technology soon, as the current test model is about the size of an iPad and requires many mirrors and lenses.
"It remains to be seen if the approach is economically feasible to make it a full-screen theater," says Matusik.
"We are optimistic that it is important for the next step in the development of glass-free 3D screen technology for large spaces such as cinemas and auditoriums."
