Mozilla withdraws from fediverse by shutting down its server Mozilla.social at Mastodon on December 17th. Moving forward, the company will focus on Firefox and artificial intelligence, in line with its strategy under interim CEO Laura Chambers to limit investment in non-core products.
TechCrunch he says:
Mozilla.social is a small example, with very few active users (293) at the time of Tuesday's announcement.
Mozilla had indicated plans to scale back its various investments earlier this year following the resignation of its CEO. At the time, Mozilla board member Laura Chambers took the job as interim CEO of Mozilla Corporation until the end of 2024.
Shortly after the change in leadership, Mozilla said it would refocus its product strategy on Firefox and artificial intelligence and significantly scale back other project efforts. Among these products are VPN, Relay and Online Footprint Scrubber, in addition to Mastodon's example. Meanwhile, the virtual world Hubs were closed.
The redirection of Mozilla's efforts comes as its flagship product, the Firefox browser, has been steadily losing market share. This leaves room for other competitors, such as startup Arc, to gain a foothold in the alternative browser market.
Months before this change in strategy, Mozilla had been touting the capabilities of fediverse, but with Chambers, the company said a "softened approach" to fediverse would allow it "greater flexibility."
In an internal memo, Mozilla said that in the future, a "much smaller team" would participate in the Mastodon ecosystem. However, at the time he did not say that the Mozilla.social instance would be shut down.
Mozilla said it was a "tough decision".
“Thank you for being part of the Mozilla.social community and for providing feedback during our closed beta. You can continue to use Mozilla.social until December 17,” reads a post on Mastodon.
Users can download their data or migrate their accounts to other servers.
