Social network X (Twitter) has launched a $XNUMX trial fee for new users, as Elon Musk believes it will curb the bots responsible for much of the platform's woes.
“Starting today, we are testing a new program (Not A Bot) in New Zealand and the Philippines. New, unverified accounts to sign up will be required a $1 annual subscription to be able to post and interact with other posts.”
“This new test was developed to reinforce our already successful efforts to reduce spam, manipulation of our platform and bot activity, while balancing platform accessibility with a small fee. It's not an effort to make a profit."
An accompanying guide for the service reveals that users who sign up for Not A Bot will also need to verify their phone numbers.
Not A Bot will not be mandatory, but new users who choose to register and not pay will not be able to post or comment on X.
It remains to be seen if the spammers will pay the dollar, or if Elon Musk is right to think that a dollar per account will kill spam and bots.
