Musk asked Meta for money to acquire OpenAI

Elon Musk, the richest man in the world, asked Meta and the CEO Mark Zuckerberg to help him finance the acquisition of OpenAI for $97,4 billion in early 2025, court documents revealed on Thursday.

The disclosure is part of a legal case between Elon Musk and OpenAI that began last year. The case is ongoing in federal court in Northern California, and a judge recently said OpenAI can move forward with counterclaims against Musk, who co-founded OpenAI as a nonprofit with Sam Altman and others in 2015.

When Musk made his proposal to buy OpenAI in February, he was outraged that the company and Altman, OpenAI's CEO, wanted to turn the business into a for-profit entity.

Altman and Musk, who were longtime friends, have become bitter rivals since OpenAI emerged as a leader in productive artificial intelligence with billions of dollars in funding from Microsoft.

Musk launched xAI in 2023 and is pushing to become a direct competitor to OpenAI. Musk later sued OpenAI, claiming breach of contract and trying to block OpenAI from becoming a for-profit company.

In its counterclaims, OpenAI alleged that Musk and xAI's "false offering" harmed its business and that Musk has engaged in "harassment" through litigation and attacks on social media and in the press.
