The US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) today admitted it was hacked by hackers.
In a internal note sent to all employees, the organization said an unknown attacker gained access to one of the servers, downloading the personal data of current and former employees. Social security figures have also leaked, according to NASA.
The agency said it discovered the hack on October 23, almost before two months. It's unclear why they waited nearly two months before notifying their employees, but it's common for US authorities to ask hacked organizations to delay notifying affected victims while they investigate an incident.
NASA has confirmed that it is working with the federal authorities "to examine the servers and determine the extent of possible data leakage and to identify potentially infected individuals."
The agency still does not know the scope of the breach and the number of employees affected. In its memo today, NASA said it is alerting all its employees to watch out for a possible scam.
"Once (the victims) are identified, NASA will provide specific information to those employees, oldestand present".
The organization stated that the research about the hack "will take time" and that she does not believe any of her missions are at risk from the hack.
