Η NASA published a map today from the program Near Earth Object (NEO). This program searches for and records all small asteroids that have managed to enter the Earth's atmosphere. THE χάρτης of NASA shows the drop points around the world.
The map was released to the scientific community, and depicts the data που έχουν συλλεχθεί από τους αισθητήρες της κυβέρνησης των USA from 1994 to 2013. Evidence shows that Earth's atmosphere has been penetrated by many small asteroids. There are 556 different recorded cases over a 20 year period.
Almost all asteroids of this size decompose into the atmosphere and are usually harmless. The notable exception was that of the Chelyabinsk asteroid, which was the largest asteroid that landed the Earth at this time.
New map data could help scientists improve estimates of Near Earth Object (NEO) size distribution.
Η εύρεση και ο χαρακτηρισμός των επικίνδυνων αστεροειδών για την προστασία του πλανήτη μας αποτελεί υψηλή προτεραιότητα για τη NASA. Είναι ένας από τους λόγους που η NASA έχει αυξήσει κατά 10% τις επενδύσεις της στην ανίχνευση αστεροειδών, το χαρακτηρισμό και τον μετριασμό των δραστηριοτήτων τους κατά τη duration of the last five years.
In addition, NASA is developing aggressive strategies with its partners in the US and abroad for detecting, monitoring, and characterizing the Near Earth Object. These activities are aimed at helping to identify a Near Earth Object that could endanger the Earth with a bump.
