Microsoft announced two new products at Microsoft Inspire this week: Microsoft 365 Backup and Microsoft 365 Archive. These are two backup solutions for the Microsoft cloud.
More than 2 billion documents and emails are added to Microsoft 365 every day, according to Microsoft. The two new products will help administrators and organizations protect data "throughout its lifecycle."
The Microsoft 365 Backup it will back up OneDrive, SharePoint and Exchange data at “unprecedented speeds” while keeping it “within the security boundaries of Microsoft 365”.
Microsoft notes that administrators will be able to set the new feature to back up all or select specific locations in SharePoint, OneDrive accounts, and Exchange inboxes. The solution also supports restoring files, locations and mailbox items “to a previous point in time”.
Microsoft 365 Backup will support search and filter functionality to find data in backups using metadata such as item or location names.
The new service will be available in the Microsoft 365 admin center.
Microsoft plans to release Microsoft 365 Backup as a preview in the fourth quarter of 2023. Interested organizations can sign up for the preview from here.
The Microsoft 365 Archive is a "cold" storage solution designed to help organizations reduce storage costs for data that is no longer in active use.
Microsoft 365 Archive adds a layer of cold storage "to preserve inactive or old data within SharePoint at a cost-effective price that matches the value of that data's lifecycle stage."
Interested organizations can apply for the public preview from here.
Both new backup products will be released in preview later this year. Microsoft has not yet revealed the price of the two products.
